New Work...

Academy 'Ode to Golf'

Recently Locke Bryan Productions was asked to create a campaign for Academy Sports and Outdoors centered around the game of golf. Instantly the idea was that we would create a juxtaposition of two worlds. One in which the game is played and the other in which time seems to stand still as a swing occurs. To be violently snapped from one to the other, the Vision Research's Phantom camera was acquired from Panavision. Luckily, Panavision just struck a deal with Vision Research to begin renting a Phantom Package.

With that in mind, I began to address the style of the commercial. I had an idea for the ending and, with that in mind, I began to model the 3d elements needed in 3ds Max. At this point I had a single frame, in which all of the footage would emulate.

Having nailed the style down, all that was left was to shoot. As luck would have it, the day we decided to shoot happened to be cloudy and relatively flat lit. This would be perfect for what lay ahead of me in post. Check out some stills I took on set of the Phantom in action.

In post, the process was adding cg lightsources and essentially painting each scene with the use of track mattes and some other clever compositing techniques. In the VFX Breakdown you can see just how far some of the shots came to get the style to work. Programs used were 3ds Max, Fume FX, VRAY, Nuke, After Effects, and Avid Symphony for finishing. Add in an very dynamic original score by Stephen Benitez and the project came together quite nicely.

Check out some of the final frames in high rez.
