Design Trends can sometime take on a mind of their own. It is certainly the case for this trend. Found in many productions, this fad is unique. Back in the days before computers got involved miniatures were used as a primary source of animation and fx work. The difference being back then, the audience wasn't supposed to know that it was a miniature set. The last film that I know of to use this effect was The Lord of the Rings Triolgy.
Now it is the trend to not only let the audience in on the secret that we are viewing a miniature world but many vfx houses go out of their way to create the mini look. For example, the sprint commercial is comprised entirely of cg. Yet with a ton of depth of field and lack of detail they nail the mini look.
As with most design trends, this one will grow old and stale. Soon they will be no basis for such a look. Client will just demand the 'miniature' look without warrant. But until then lets bask in the examples of the trend that made it just that....a trend.
